Sodalite was used as early as 2500 B.C. by the people of Peru. It gets its name from its rich sodium content and was highly prized for jewellery and ornamental carvings. Deposits were found in 1891 in Ontario, Canada. Its popularity was as an ornamental stone and was called Princess Blue due to a visit from the royal family at the time of its discovery. While Sodalite is a blue stone it can have white and orange veining. The white is White Calcite and the orange is either Calcite or Feldspar (Sunstone).
Often mistaken for Lapis Lazuli, Sodalite is a navy blue and Lapis is normally a bright royal blue. Lapis also has Pyrite growing with it, while Sodalite does not.
